Due to the lack of fresh supplies and fully equipped galley, there won't be any Sunday Roasts or English breakfasts! The basis of our diet will predominantly be high calorie and low weight freeze dried meals (similar to army rations). We are planning to have three meals per day - porridge for breakfast and then 2 other rehydrated delights for lunch and dinner. We will also take a mix of snacks – chocolate, nuts, energy bars and drinks – to provide us with energy between meals whilst we are rowing. It is estimated we will burn more than 7,000 calories each day – approximately three times more than the normal average for an active male/female.
We learned on the Atlantic that variety is very important when planning our diet. Food is very much a highlight every day and therefore the more interesting/varied we can make it the better. We will definitely be taking a couple of treats as well for when we are in need of a lift!
The boat is equipped with a desalinator which produces drinking water from the sea water. Occasionally previous ocean rowers have had the misfortune of their water maker breaking down, thus ending their attempt. We will carry a full complement of spares, as well as a spare hand powered water maker to minimise this risk.
