1000 miles to go!!

13 Jun 2009

We've finally passed the elusive 1000miles to go mark!! Big smiles all round today as we ticked over from 1001 to 1000 miles to the finish, really feels like we're getting there at last!! Peaches party tomorrow to celebrate, the last party saw the 'Hairy Legs' semi-final so tomorrow will be the final showdown between the two hairiest crew members (would be rude to reveal who they both are but just to clarify, its not me!). Personally judging by the locks on some of the crews legs i think some may have cheated and started cultivating their growth back in Oz.

The ex-Atlantic rowers on board know how quickly the last 1000 miles will fly by, so desperate as we are to return to a world where food doesn't come out of the bag, washing is a daily not monthly occourence, and sleep lasts for longer than a couple of hours, we are trying our best to savour the incredible sights, sounds and experiences that are a daily treat out here, not to mention the awesome company of each other.

Another reason we are particularly grateful at our fortune of still being out here at the moment is the sad news that Simon Prior has had to retire from the race. Rowing an Ocean is incredibly hard even with the support and reassurance that comes from being part of a team, to attempt it solo is truly inspirational, and certainly not a challenge that any on this boat would eagerly take on. Simon had an incredible race start and was storming ahead. Unfortuntely a massive part of being succesful at crossing an ocean is due to sheer luck, and luck has not been on Simon's side as he has been plaugued by equipment failures, medical problems and bad weather. Simon, we take our proverbial hats off to you.
